Locked out
Safely, right now
- Stay somewhere warm and safe while you wait, such as a neighbour's or your car.
- Don't break a window or pry the door. It adds damage without getting you in sooner.
- Have a photo ID with your address ready if you can.
Key broke in the lock
Safely, right now
- Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
- Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.
Lock won't turn
Safely, right now
- Stop turning hard: a key that bends or snaps makes the job bigger.
- Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.
Lost keys
Safely, right now
- Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
- Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.
Once the report is filed, the door still has to lock tonight. In Island Grove we repair split frames and bent strikes, replace damaged cylinders, rekey anything that might have been compromised, and talk through sensible upgrades later, once the house feels like yours again. We serve Eastbourne as well.

The fix, explained · Island Grove
What is the door doing?
EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceAfter a week of humid weather the back door has swollen in its frame.
The fix
Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything.
EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceThe heavy glass door has been scraping the threshold for weeks.
The fix
Businesses are locked out by people as often as by hardware. A keyholder is away, a former employee still has a key, a master key has gone missing, or the only spare lives in a drawer behind the locked door.
EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionIn the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door.
The fix
A car key that breaks in the door or the ignition is handled with the same extraction tools, with one difference. On most vehicles the plastic head of the key carries the transponder chip and the remote buttons, and that half is usually intact in your hand.
EmergencyBreak-In Damage Lock RepairThere is a hole where the cylinder used to be.
The fix
A break-in repair happens alongside a police file and an insurance claim, and a good locksmith keeps both in mind. Before any hardware is moved the damage is photographed as found: door face, edge, strike, jamb, hinges and glass.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe key turns a full circle without any resistance and the deadbolt stays exactly where it is.
The fix
Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.
The fix
Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads. Replacement puts new hardware on the door: a new deadbolt or handle, and a finish that may not match its neighbours.

What the census means at the door
43%
Homes of every age. About 43% of homes in Georgina were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Homes of different generations tend to have different key habits. Older houses may have keys copied many times; newer ones may still have contractor keys about. A locksmith in a mixed area asks about both before recommending anything.
83%
Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 83% of homes in Georgina (2021 Census).
Where homes are mostly detached, patio and sliding doors deserve attention alongside the hinged ones. Auxiliary locks, pin locks and better latches for sliders are routine additions that a locksmith brings on the same visit as the front door work.

When you call from Island Grove, a locksmith answers, not a dispatcher reading a script. He asks what the door is doing, tells you what the visit will likely involve, and arranges a time. The assessment and the price happen at the door, once he has seen the hardware. The same person who took the call is the one who does the work.

No surprises on the doorstep. What we described on the phone is what we plan to do. If the door tells us something different when we see it, we stop and talk before going further.
Helping you choose well. Hardware ranges from basic to heavy-duty and simple to electronic. We explain the differences that actually matter for your door and leave the choice with you.
Neat work, neatly finished. Holes drilled cleanly, hardware aligned, nothing crooked or forced. A lock should look like it belongs on the door, and we take the time to make sure it does.

Which fix fits?
IfYour front door has only the lock in the knob, nothing else.
ThenAdd a proper deadbolt above it.
A bolt into a reinforced strike is what actually holds a door; the knob just keeps it closed.
IfThe deadbolt wobbles and the screws spin in the door.
ThenRe-fit the hardware and repair the bore.
Stripped holes can be plugged and redrilled, so the same lock sits tight again.
IfYou are tired of carrying keys and want a code instead.
ThenA keypad deadbolt with a key override.
Each family member gets a code, guests get a temporary one, and a mechanical key remains for the day the batteries die.
IfYou were shovelling the driveway after dark and the ring must have slid out of your coat pocket somewhere under a metre of snow.
ThenLost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey.
Rekeying and replacing a lock arrive at the same place by different roads.
What to expect, answered
Our alarm is armed. What happens when you open the door?
The opening is planned around it. Before any work, the person with the alarm code is ready to disarm, and where a monitoring company is involved they can be told to expect an entry at that address. If the contact trips anyway, the authorised person speaks to the station with the account password. Nothing about the alarm is bypassed; the door is opened, the system is disarmed normally, and the event is logged like any other.
Why did my key break at all?
Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.
Does a deadbolt work with a storm door or screen door?
It does, with one check: the thumb-turn and the outside cylinder have to clear the storm door when it closes. Most storm doors leave enough depth, but a low-profile deadbolt trim is chosen where the gap is tight. The storm door's own latch is separate and does not replace a bolt on the main door, since a screen frame gives little resistance on its own.
Is it common for a previous owner or tenant to keep a mailbox key?
It happens more often than people expect, especially in a building where compartments changed hands with a single set of keys and no clear record of who returned what. Replacing the lock rather than simply asking around settles it, since a new cylinder makes any key still out there, regardless of who holds it, stop working.
