Broken Key Extraction

In the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door. You are holding the plastic head with the buttons on it, the metal blade is inside the lock, and the spare is on a hook at home.

In plain words

A car key that breaks in the door or the ignition is handled with the same extraction tools, with one difference. On most vehicles the plastic head of the key carries the transponder chip and the remote buttons, and that half is usually intact in your hand. Once the blade is drawn out of the lock, a new blade can often be cut and fitted to the existing head, so the chip keeps talking to the car without reprogramming. The ignition wafers are checked for disturbance and the steering lock is confirmed free. Proof of ownership is asked for before work begins.

Sound familiar?

That key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it. Today it finally cracked at the deepest cut. The stub is in the lock, and the spare you found goes in a few millimetres and stops against it.

How the visit goes

Bunch of keys hanging from a key in a door lock, beside a black knob and the door's metal edge plate.
  1. 1

Reading the cylinder for the cause

Even a lock in good order can break a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, so the cylinder is examined for a contributing cause all the same. The locksmith looks for grit and salt crust in the keyway, a cylinder cap that has loosened and let the plug shift, pins that have worn flat so the key needs force to lift them, springs that have weakened, and burrs at the mouth of the keyway that drag on the blade. On an exterior door the strike and hinges are checked as well, since a bolt that binds in its pocket makes the key carry the load. Each finding shapes the advice given once the fragment is out.

  2. 2

Thawing first on a frozen lock

A cylinder that broke a key because it was frozen needs the ice dealt with before the fragment will move. The locksmith works lock de-icer into the keyway, or holds gentle heat near the cylinder, until the ice inside liquefies and the plug loosens. Boiling water from the kettle stays indoors: it refreezes inside the keyway and can split a cold cylinder. With the plug free and at rest, the extraction proceeds as normal. Afterwards the cylinder is dried thoroughly and given a water-repelling dry lubricant rather than one that traps moisture, so the same morning is far less likely to repeat.

  3. 3

Your car key, rebuilt rather than replaced

For a vehicle, the head of the key that carries the transponder chip and remote buttons has usually been saved, and a new blade cut and fitted to it, so the car recognizes the key as it always did. The door lock and ignition have been tested with it, and the ignition wafers checked for damage from the break. It is a good moment to have a second complete key made, since a car with one key is a car one snap away from a tow. Lightening the key ring so it does not hang on the ignition adds years to both key and cylinder.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Condition of the cylinder

Worn pins, a loose cap, grit or corrosion found after the piece is out may call for a service, a rekey or a new cylinder, each explained and quoted separately.

  2. 2

    Door or strike adjustment

When the key broke because the bolt was binding in a swollen or sagging door, correcting hinges, strike or weatherstrip is offered and quoted as its own item.

  3. 3

How the new key is made

Cutting from a key code or a crisp spare, decoding the two halves with a gauge, or cutting a restricted blank from system records each take different time and stock.

Same fees day, night or weekend.

Broken Key Extraction: questions

Advice · (289) 803-2818

What lubricant should I use on the lock afterwards?

Whatever the lock's own maker specifies, since cylinders differ: many call for a dry graphite or PTFE spray blown into the keyway and worked in with the key, once or twice a year, while others prohibit graphite and specify their own product instead. General-purpose oils, grease and sprays feel smooth at first but on most cylinders collect dust and clog the pins, which leads back to the sticking that breaks keys. A little goes a long way; too much of any lubricant can also hold moisture.

Why did my key break at all?

Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.

My key is a restricted or high-security type. Can it still be extracted and replaced?

Extraction is the same careful process; the keyway is usually narrower and the cuts more complex, so it takes longer. The replacement key is different: restricted blanks are cut only from the system's records, so have the authorization card that was supplied with the system to hand, or the locksmith who installed it is contacted. Until then the spare, if you have one, keeps the door working.

What the census means at the door

43%

Homes of every age. About 43% of homes in Georgina were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is mixed, doors that have been replaced sit beside doors that never were. A new door in an old frame, or an old door in a repaired frame, needs its strike and hinges checked together so the whole assembly works as one.

83%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 83% of homes in Georgina (2021 Census).

Garage entry doors on detached houses are often the household's real front door, used more than the formal entry. They deserve the same quality of lock, and keying them alike with the house means one key does the whole daily routine.
